Zing! 1.0.2 Windows Beta

Welcome to the Zing! Windows Beta installation guide. This page will guide you through the steps necessary to download and install a working copy of Zing! 1.0.2 on your Windows machine.
If at any time during this guide something bad happens, just close and reopen Scratch. This should reverse any changes you made. Also, selecting text in Squeak is strange. When you move your mouse out of the window, the text will appear to deselect itself. Don't worry - It's still selected, you just can't see it.

Step 1: Download

You'll need to download two things: a new copy of Scratch, and the Zing Windows Beta package. (if you already have Scratch, see this page for what to do before you download.)

After you have downloaded Scratch, complete the setup. Unpack the .zip file you downloaded.

Step 2: Code

Once you have completed all of the previous step, follow these steps carefully:

1. Open Scratch.
2. While pressing the shift key, click in the loop of the R in the Scratch logo. (top left corner) Click "turn fill screen off".
3. Click anywhere in the white space that appears, then select "open...", then "workspace". A pale yellow box should appear.
4. Open Windows Explorer, then navigate to and open the file named "changes.txt".
5. Click anywhere in the "changes.txt" file then hold ctrl and press a, then while sill holding ctrl press c.
6. Back in Scratch, mouse over the yellow box that appeared, then click the [-] button above the scroll bar. Select "paste (v)".
7. Select all of the text in the box (press alt-a), then click the [-] button again. This time, select "more...", then "file it in".
8. Another yellow box will pop up with some text in it. Select the last line of text (end of block expected->^nil) and delete it.
9. Press alt-s, then type your initials in the box. Press accept.
10. When the gray bar disappears, close the yellow box by clicking the x in the top left corner.
11. when the "Changes have not been saved" prompt appears, click Yes.

Step 3: Images

After completing step 2, follow these steps carefully:

1. Open Windows Explorer, then navigate to the ScratchSkin folder you downloaded.
2. Move the ScratchSkin folder to the same folder as the Scratch program. (either C:\Program Files\Scratch or C:\Program Files (x86)\Scratch)
3. Click on the Help menu, then "Load Skin". Wait for it to finish.
4. Dismiss the popup.
5. Click anywhere in the white space, then click "windows...", then "find window", then "ScratchFrame".
6. Click on the small pink (x) that appeared in the top left corner of the window. The Scratch interface will disappear.
7. Click in the white area, then click "open...", then "Scratch". Zing will appear.
8. Click Help, then click "Save Image", then Yes. Zing will close.

Step 4: Finish

After completing step 3, simply open Zing! The ZIng interface will come up, and you can start programming right away!

If you want to continue, try the following steps:

DEFAULT SPRITE:
1. Find the file named default.sprite that you downloaded.
2. Move the file into the folder (Zing folder)\Media\Costumes.
3. Close and reopen Zing. You should have the official Zing! default sprite.

CHANGE NAME:
1. FInd the shortcut on the desktop for Zing!
2. Right click the icon, then select "Properties".
3. Click the "General" tab, then click in the text box to the right of the icon.
4. Type in "Zing!"
5. Click "Apply", then close the properties window. The shortcut name should have changed. If you want to change the Start Menu name as well, follow these same steps, right clicking on the Start Menu entry instead of the desktop icon.

CHANGE ICON:
1. FInd the shortcut on the desktop for Zing!
2. Right click the icon, then select "Properties".
3. Click the "Shortcut" tab, then click "Change icon...".
4. Click "Browse...", then browse to the contents of the folder you downloaded at the beginning. Double-click "logo.ico".
5. Select the Zing logo from the grid, then click OK.
6. Click "Apply", then close the properties window. The shortcut icon should have changed. If you want to change the Start Menu icon as well, follow these same steps, right clicking on the Start Menu entry instead of the desktop icon.
